2019 High School Journalism Day

8:00 – 8:40 a.m. – Check in for HS Advisers (3rd floor, Grand Foyer, University Center)

8:50 – 10 a.m. – Welcome Session and MJEA High School Journalism Awards (UC Ballroom, University Center) Welcome celebration and MJEA awards presentation.

10:10 – 11 a.m. – Workshop #1 - “Fake News Game Show” w/ Prof. Dennis Swibold (UC Ballroom) Is it real or is it fake? Play the game and learn about fake news.

11:10-noon – Workshop Sessions Round 1

Workshop #2 - “Catch the Bad Guys and Save the World!” w/ Prof. Joe Eaton (DAH 004) Learn simple techniques of investigative reporting from an expert.

Workshop #3 – “The Reporting Gear in Your Pocket” w/ Prof. Ray Fanning & Prof. Jeremy Lurgio (DAH 009) Learn how to take better photos and video with your smartphone.

Workshop #4 – “In the Beginning” w/ Prof. Jule Banville (DAH 210) How to start and write killer leads for almost any kind of journalism. Get the secret to great opening lines.

Workshop #5 – “They aren’t like me” w/ Prof. Jason Begay (DAH 316) How to report on diverse communities and incorporate diversity into your stories.

Workshop #6 – “Only You: Telling Your Story Through Podcasting” w/ Dean Denise Dowling (DAH 309) Learn the basics of podcasting and telling stories out loud. *Limited Space available, only open to first 16 students

11:10-noon p.m. – High School Advisers’ Session (DAH 401) Join Prof. Lee Banville for a practical discussion on high school journalism and the law.

12:00-12:10 p.m. – Group Photo (Main Entry of DAH)

12:10-1:00 p.m. – Student Lunch in the Food Zoo

1:10-2 p.m. – Workshop Sessions Round 2

Workshop #7 – “Can This Hashtag Get Me Suspended?” w/ Prof. Lee Banville (DAH 210) The rules around schools. What they can and cannot do to students for speaking out in class and on social media.

Workshop #8 – “Stories that Saved our Planet” w/ Prof. Nadia White (DAH 004) What you don’t know can kill you. Learn about environmental journalists who told industry secrets to save the world.

Workshop #9 – “Sports Photography for the Non-Sports Fan” w/ visiting Prof. Preston Gannaway (DAH 316) An un-athletic professional photojournalist’s tour of sports-related assignments.

Workshop #10 – “You Do You on YouTube” w/ Prof. Kevin Tompkins & Prof. Ray Fanning (DAH 101) Come visit our television news control room and receive hands on help in creating video projects.

Workshop #11 – “Words + Pictures + Your Creativity = Fun with Design” w/ Prof. Keith Graham (DAH 009) Design your publication with flair.

2:00 p.m. – H.S. Journalism Day ends.

We also ask that you fill out this spreadsheet with attending students’ names and email addresses. Providing this information in advance will streamline our check-in time.
