Dean's forum to feature Ferguson reporters

Dean Larry Abramson will host a discussion with reporters who covered the death of Michael Brown and the protests and civil unrest that followed in Ferguson, Missouri.

Reporters will join us via Skype. J-School Dean Larry Abramson will moderate. Students and members of the community are invited to join the discussion at the UC Theater on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Stephen Giegerich of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Mustafa Hussein of Argus Radio have been confirmed for the forum. Dean Abramson is expecting additional speakers as well.

“We hope to hear about what it’s been like to cover Ferguson, which I think has been a watershed story in a lot of ways,” said Abramson. “It’s really created a lot of journalistic dilemmas.”

Abramson said the coverage in Ferguson has also illustrated the power of social media, adding that the story really took off on Twitter.

“It was one of the first live-streamed stories that really got a lot of momentum that way,” he said. “One of our participants helped draw attention to the events through his live streaming service. We’ll also be discussing the ethics of covering a story that develops as quickly as this one did.”

The forum is the first in a series examining hot topics in journalism.
