A.B. Guthrie Memorial Fund Scholarship: Awarded to a graduate student with demonstrated writing talent.

Al Price Scholarship: A Marine, teacher and J-School’s custodian, Al set this scholarship up to support the students he was so fond of, and they of him.

Albert Erickson Scholarship: Awarded to a student with strong spelling skills who expresses a desire to become an editor of a Montana newspaper.

Andrew C. Cogswell Scholarship: In honor of the late Professor Andrew C. Cogswell who taught at the School of Journalism for 15 years, was director of the UM Public Service Division from 1946 and was dean of students from 1995 to 1970.

Art Jette Memorial Award: Recognizes contributions to the student newspaper in personality, good humor and willingness to work.

Betsy Cohen Memorial Internship Scholarship: In honor of alum and Missoulian reporter Betsy Cohen, awarded to a student interning anywhere in the country.

Billings Family Journalism Scholarship: Awarded to a female graduate student who shares the values of the donor and shows promise in the field.

Birdwell Scholarship in Journalism: Recognizes a Native American student from Montana majoring in broadcast journalism.

Blanche C. Lanstrum Scholarship: Recognizes professional promise for a woman who plans to pursue a career in print journalism.

Blumberg Fund for Investigative Journalism: Awarded to students for pursuit of investigative reporting.

Boatman Family Scholarship: Awarded to a promising journalism student who is involved in the community.

Broadcast Professional Promise Award: Recognizes professional promise in radio or television reporting, writing and production. 

Bruce M. Kennedy Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to an outstanding student interested in working for a weekly or small daily newspaper as a photographer.

Butte Press Club Scholarship: Recognizes a journalism student who shows promise in print or broadcast journalism. Download the application.

C.G. Rochon Scholarship: Awarded to a graduating high school senior from Anaconda, Mont. who wishes to study journalism at UM.

Carol Van Valkenburg Scholarship: Awarded to a Journalism student who serves as an editor of the Kaimin, named in honor of a dedicated Professor Emeritus who gave over 30 years to the J-School and Kaimin.

Connie Craney Scholarship: Awarded to a junior broadcast journalism student with professional potential.

Cordillera Montana Mountain Scholarship: Awarded to a student with proven potential in a career in broadcast journalism.

Cordingley Scholarship: Recognizes native Montanan pursuing a career in print journalism who has very strong professional convictions.

Crown Reporting Graduate Fellowship: Awarded to two 2nd year graduate students reporting stories of climate, community and conservation in Montana, Alberta and British Columbia. The fellowship includes a mentorship as well.

Dan Vichorek Native American Scholarship: Dan’s family and friends set up this scholarship to award an outstanding Native American journalism student after his sudden passing in 2001.

Dan Vichorek Scholarship: Awarded to a promising Native American journalism student who shows wit, wisdom and a flair for writing about the environment, wildlife, history and grassroots Montana.

Danielle Dellerson Hayes: Honoring Danielle’s legacy as a journalism and law student at the U of M, a news reporter and producer at NBC-Missoula, and her love of the university and the state of Montana.

Dean's Awards: Recognizes achievement and outstanding performance in journalism.

Dean's Scholarship for Incoming Freshman: New scholarship fund to encourage and attract the best and brightest young journalists. Awards are given on a rolling basis at the discretion of the dean.

Dean Charles E. Hood International Journalism Scholarship: in memory of former Journalism Dean Charlie Hood, this scholarship is awarded to a professional program student who has demonstrated passion for international reporting.

D.J. Shults Journalism Scholarship: Awarded to outstanding students from Big Sandy High, a Chouteau County high school or another Montana high school studying journalism. 

Don Anderson Scholarship: Recognizes excellence in journalism, proven editorial craftsmanship, and an appreciation of the role newspapers play in American society.

Don Oliver Scholarship: Awarded to a journalism student on academic merit who plans to write in the media as a professional.

Don Weston & Ron Richards Scholarship: Recognizes a deserving, upper-level broadcast journalism student.

Dorcas Keach Northey Scholarship: Recognizes a journalism student who demonstrates professional promise and good performance in the classroom.

Dorothy Rochon Powers Scholarship: Awarded to an outstanding junior, senior or graduate-level student in journalism who shows great promise as a reporter, editor or columnist, and reflects the qualities demonstrated by its namesake.

Douglass Thomas Scholarship: Recognizes a deserving journalism student whose primary interests lie in the business aspects of the profession such as public relations, administration, sales, advertising or management.

Edward B. Dugan Award: Recognizes a member of the Kaimin staff who exhibits outstanding leadership.

Fred Martin Scholarship in Community Journalism: Awarded every other year to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student interested in working for a weekly or small daily paper and is chosen by faculty to cover the legislative session.

Friends of Kari Friedman Study Abroad Scholarship: This scholarship in memory of Kari Gayle Friedman (Class of 2007), is awarded to students participating in the Montana Journalism Abroad program, to honor Kari’s enthusiasm for international reporting.

Gannett Foundation General Excellence Award (presented by the Great Falls Tribune): Recognizes both academic excellence and professional promise.

Gannett Foundation Native American Scholarship (presented by the Great Falls Tribune) – Recognizes professional promise in journalism.

George and Marie Lynch McVey Scholarship: Awarded to a journalism student who is a promising writer, specifically focusing on editorial, feature, sports or investigative reporting.

Guy Mooney Scholarship: Recognizes a journalism student who demonstrates both integrity and scholastic ability.

Harold Seipp Scholarship: Awarded to a deserving journalism student specializing in print.

John Bansch Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a student with a passion for sports in honor of John Bansch, an alum who covered sports for the Indianapolis Star for over 40 years.

Jean Kountz & Hal G. Stearns Scholarship: Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate journalism student who demonstrates professional potential, academic ability and embodies the qualities of the scholarship’s namesake.

Jeff Cole Memorial Journalism Scholarship: Awarded to a journalism student who demonstrates, in performance and potential, the traits of Jeff Cole.

Jennifer Servo Memorial Award: Awarded to a graduating UM senior with outstanding professional potential in broadcast journalism.

Jerry L. Madden Memorial Scholarship for Journalistic Ethics – Awarded to a student in the “First Amendment and Journalism Law” course with the highest grade and deepest respect and understanding of the First Amendment and the role of ethics in journalism.

John Forssen Memorial Scholarship: Recognizes a student who demonstrates professional promise in journalism.  

Judith and Neil Morgan Endowed Scholarship: Awarded to a student showing a special spark, dedication, integrity and imagination.

Kaimin “Go To” Award: Recognizes a Kaimin staff member who is always willing to work.

KECI-TV13 - NBC: Montana created this scholarship to award an outstanding broadcast journalism student who wishes to pursue a career in television news.

Kim Williams Fellowship: Awarded to a promising graduate student in journalism to pursue an interest in environmental studies and issues.

Kinney Journalism Scholarship: Recognizes professional promise and excellence in broadcast journalism.

Larcombe Family Scholarship: Awarded to a worthy print journalism student.

Lee & Donna Metcalf Scholarship: Recognizes a journalism student with a 3.5 GPA or higher who has a demonstrated interest and focus on political reporting.

Lee Enterprises Native American Scholarship: Recognizes a strong academic record and professional promise.

Leon K. Lenz Journalism Scholarship: Awarded to a Journalism student in good academic standing, in honor of Leon K. Lenz (class of 1974), a newsroom icon who retired from the Great Falls Tribune  after 35 years of service.

Louis M. & Dorothy MacLane Thayer Journalism Scholarship: Recognizes achievement and outstanding performance in journalism.

Lucille & McLean Clark Television Scholarship: Awarded to a journalism student who demonstrates high standards of excellence in television courses and exhibits professional promise.

Madison S. Turner Scholarship: Awarded to a journalism student who applies by writing an essay on their goals and aspirations, how they have contributed to society and how their future plans will benefit society.

Mark Henckel Scholarship: Recognizes a student who exemplifies Mark’s interest in outdoors and tireless advocacy.

Mary DeJarnette Holter Memorial Scholarship: Recognizes excellence in journalism and a commitment to service.

Montana Broadcasters Association Joe Durso, Jr. Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a broadcast journalism student entering his or her senior year, from Montana, who possesses Joe’s professional attitude.

Melissa Weaver Memorial Scholarship: Recognizes a junior or senior undergraduate in journalism whose academic achievement and extracurricular involvement embody Melissa’s spirit.

Melvin & Myrtle Lord Scholarship: Awarded to a journalism student entering their junior, senior or graduate year based on probable professional success.

Montana Newspaper Association Dean Stone Award: Recognizes achievement and outstanding performance in journalism, honoring the founder of the School of Journalism.

Montana Newspaper Association Pat Burke Memorial Scholarship: Recognizes professional promise in journalism, in honor of the wife of the late Frank Burke, a longtime publisher of the Glendive Ranger-Review.

Myre-McGaugh Scholarship: Awarded to a deserving journalism student, preferably from Flathead County.

Norman A. Johnson Memorial Award: Recognizes academic excellence and professional potential in journalism in honor of its namesake, who was a Kaimin editor.

Olaf J. Bue Memorial Award: Recognizes outstanding reporting for the Kaimin.

Owen E. Grinde Memorial Scholarship: Awarded to a graduate of a Montana high school entering their senior year in the School of Journalism.

Phil Hess Memorial Student Service Award: Recognizes service to Montana through work for Montana Pubic Radio and Montana PBS and in memory or Phil Hess, founder of KUFM Radio.

Richard Brown Stripp Scholarship: Awarded to a journalism student who shows talent and interest in community journalism.

Richard Shirley Memorial Scholarship: Recognizes professional promise in photojournalism.

Robert C. McGiffert Excellence Award: Awarded to a journalism student with a special flair for news editing or commitment to free speech and free press principles of the First Amendment.

Ronald E. Miller Award: Recognizes achievement and outstanding performance in journalism.

Rosetta Rush Kamlowsky Memorial Scholarship: Recognizes a junior who shows promise in radio, especially in radio talk show format.

Sam & Nelly Maclay Award: The Maclay children established this award in 1962 to honor their parents , this award goes to a promising student (every third year).
